ORTHOKERATOLOGY:
CORRECTING YOUR VISION WHILE YOU SLEEP
Orthokeratology, or OrthoK, is a treatment where a patient wears a retainer lens, similar to a contact lens, at night while sleeping and removes upon awakening to correct nearsightedness (myopia) and/or astigmatism in a non-surgical reversible method.
OrthoK lenses redistribute corneal tissue (the front of the eye) to allow light to focus directly on your retina and provide improved vision.
Orthokeratology allows good vision during the day with minimal to no use of glasses during waking hours.
Orthokeratology is performed on adults and children as numerous studies have shown it may slow or stop the progression of nearsightedness. In our practice, not only have we observed the slowing of nearsightedness progression, but many kids have had no increase in prescription since they have started orthokeratology treatment.
The following studies have shown the benefits of orthokeratology in slowing the progression of nearsightedness:
LORIC (Long Term Ortho-K Research In Children)
CLAMP (Contact Lens And Myopia Progression)
COMET (Correction of Myopia Evaluation Trial)
CRAYON (Corneal Reshaping and Yearly Observation of Nearsightedness)
COOKI (Children's Overnight Orthokeratology Investigation)
SMART (Stabilization of Myopia through Accelerated Reshaping Technologies)
CANDY (Controlling Astigmatism and Nearsightedness in Developing Youth)
